Amir Steinberg, MD joined Westchester Medical Center in 2021 as their clinical director of adult stem cell transplantation. He is the director of the adult hematology-oncology fellowship program. He also has an appointment as Professor of Medicine at New York Medical College. Dr. Steinberg's clinical focus is on hematologic malignancies and cellular therapy. He has been involved in research focused on lymphoma, quality of care, and nonmalignant transplantation. During his career he has served as the principal investigator (PI) for a study investigating a conditioning regimen called DRBEAT for primary central nervous system lymphoma and was site PI for the multicenter ABVD vs AVD with brentuximab study for advanced stage Hodgkin lymphoma. He also served as PI for transplant studies in Crohn's Disease and site PI for transplant studies for sickle cell anemia and multiple sclerosis. Dr. Steinberg also has experience with bloodless transplantation for Jehovah's Witness patients and has published a protocol on this approach. Dr. Steinberg is actively involved in FACT, the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy and is co-chair of FACT's Performance Improvement Committee.
Dr. Steinberg grew up in Texas. When he was a senior in high school he was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. His experiences and the care he received inspired him to pursue a career in oncology to give back and to treat others and he was treated. Dr. Steinberg graduated magna cum laude from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in History and received his medical degree from Texas Tech University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Medical Center and his fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at Lenox Hill Hospital. He then pursued a bone marrow transplant fellowship at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. He worked at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and was an assistant professor at UCLA before joining Mount Sinai Hospital stem cell transplant program in 2011. In his almost 10 years at Mount Sinai, during which he was promoted to associate professor, Dr. Steinberg served as the Director of Quality for the transplant program and Transplant Unit Director.
